Search the real world

- Recognize, analyze and interpret images

ROle

My role as a solo was to make it seamless end to end. Wearing several hats such as a Researcher and finding what my target audience would need, and going through several iterations through user flows, low fidelity and high fidelity wire-framing, mockups and workable prototype as a UX, interactive and visual designer.

Problem Statement

Articulating through words in any search engine to gain information about any animate or inanimate objects is sometimes hard, especially when the object is complex. So I wanted to design a mobile app that makes searching more fun, insightful and long term retention through Image Recognition Technology.

Need For this idea

While doing a search. Unable to articulate complex information in words.

  1. We don’t find what we look for and then we forget it.

  2. Unable to share it with others.

  3. Textual descriptive learning is lot slower than pictorial representations or videos.

  4. Grasping and retention power is minimum as compared to visuals.

  5. To bridge language barrier and help even mute.

Constraints

Since in real life we don’t have endless time to work, main constraint is to keep the project within a 1.5 months timeline and create a MVP (minimum viable product).

Solution

Solution was to create a usable MVP (minimum viable product) using Image recognition technology to search the real world, which can recognize, analyze and interpret images accurately.

PROCESS

Ux process doesn’t follow a linear methodology. But for the purpose of case study, I have curated the idea in a linear fashion in the following category:

Image recognition technology - can be used for many other benefits

  • Recognize and offer information for historical landmarks

  • Scan barcodes and QR codes

  • Recognize books, CDs, artwork, logos, and other 2D objects

  • Add contacts by scanning business cards

  • Recognize and conduct a search for similar products

  • Solve Sudoku Puzzles

  • Translate foreign language text

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

Taptapsee- This mobile camera app was designed to address the needs of blind and visually impaired users.

Camfind -This app offers a mobile visual search engine. Take a picture of an object and the app will tell you what it is and generate practical results like images, videos, and local shopping offers.

Google Lens -Ways to look up a dish directly from the menu, add events to your calendar, get directions, call a number, translate words and more. Or just copy and paste to save a little time.

Google reverse image search - It will help you find the original source of photographs, memes and profile pictures on your Android mobile phone, iPhone or iPad

Although these apps were closer to my goal, I wanted to flex my muscles to deeply understanding their nitty-gritty and simplify it further with least number of steps to the result. Especially in terms of video capturing for mute people who would find it hard to phrase a sentence or just for fun learning along with image search. Hence, Spot would facilitate capturing a moment in the form of a image/video and in return can find a way to learn languages, shop or know more about the subject on web.
